A new annotated English translation of Voltaire’s Candide, or Optimism, with a full variorum apparatus and critical companion.
The base text is the Garnier 1877 edition of Voltaire’s Œuvres complètes, tome 21, reproducing Voltaire’s final authorized text (the édition encadrée, Cramer, 1775) and incorporating the 1761 additions to Chapter XXII. The translation is newly made for this edition rather than adapted from any existing English version, and aims to preserve Voltaire’s brisk, dry, deceptively simple irony: where the French is plain, the English is plain; where Voltaire deploys philosophical jargon, the English preserves its mock-pomposity.
The edition carries 247 numbered footnotes in three classified categories: [V] variorum notes collating the 1759 and 1761 editions, [T] translation notes recording significant choices among possible English renderings, and [H] historical and contextual commentary for first-time readers. Variorum blocks set the 1759 and 1761 states of the text side by side. A critical companion essay, an editor’s introduction, and a complete apparatus accompany the translation.
Intended for classroom use, independent readers, and anyone wanting an openly licensed Candide with scholarly apparatus rather than a bare public-domain reprint. Free to read, download, and assign.
