FOREWORD
Everyone in town knew Helen Kennard Bettin -- and loved her. She and her husband, George, used to drive down Michigan Avenue in their vintage Doge roadster, waving to everybody. Helen was always a ready volunteer for civic improvement projects. Her passion for Glendora and its people knew no bounds.
Right after World War II, Helen discovered that many of Glendora's pioneers were thinning out and that she had better get to the remaining ones if details of their early years were not to be lost forever. Then the only written account of Glendora's past was Ruth Pratt Kimball's brief history done at the time of the 1937 Golden Anniversary of Glendora.
A member of a remarkably well-educated family, Helen was graduated from Pomona College in 1911. Her research techniques were simple and straightforward; she let old-times tell their stories in their own way. She sat down with each of them and had a friendly chat, all the time taking notes. Later behind her typewriter she interpreted what they had told her. Since she had lived though much of Glendora's history herself, she was able to give genuine meaning to what had been told to her. Her goal as historic preservation; what she has preserved is priceless...
