Address "to our countrymen" in justification of "our startling and reprehended conduct" in the rescue of a fugitive slave by an abolitionist mob in Syracuse on Oct. 1, 1851.

By Gerrit Smith, who regularly presided over the anniversary celebration of the Jerry rescue until 1859. Cf. Harlow, R.V. Gerrit Smith, philanthropist and reformer, 1939, p. 303.
