Excerpts
Local historians disagree on how many of them there were, and on just what year they arrived here, but one fact seems to weave itself into most of the stories, "Among these early settlers who arrived before 1840, there was not a bad one in the lot". This fact seems borne out by the fact that within a few short years they had founded three churches, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist. These were not just strong "characters", but ask were people of CHARACTER.

It was hard to choose one. It is written in local histories that four men came to the area in 1834 and built cabins. Then, three of them went back to Pennsylvania that fall to return with their families the following spring, leaving just one of the men to guard their cabins, and that during that winter he became the father of the first white child born south of Rock River in Rock Island County. Of course, this leaves out the fact that his young bride had come with him and the other three men. Because women were so often omitted from pioneer histories, this book is written as seven women might have written their stories.
