The Americans: Work and Leisure before 1800
The pictures on these pages show the daily lives of Americans before 1800. Many things have changed: few alligators threaten us; airplanes and trains now carry mail between towns; we use power machinery to raise crops and bake bread. But the basic business of life was the same as today.
Early Americans also ate, worked, courted, went to church, went to war, had children, danced, and caroused.
