Edition Notes

"The life of Ariosto briefly and compendiously gathered out of sundrie Italian writers, by John Harington": p. 414-423.

Title-page, engraved by Thomas Cockson, includes portraits of Ariosto and Harington; around the portrait of Ariosto is engraved "Il divino Lodovico Ariosto"; this engraved plate is the same as that used for the 1591 edition, with the lettering revised and reengraved.

The engraved full page illustrations preceding each canto are reengraved from those prepared by Girolamo Porro for the edition published at Venice in 1584.

Imprint from colophon.

Printer's mark (McK. 170) on last leaf.

Errors in paging; 187-188 blank.

"A preface, or rather A briefe apologie of poetrie ... "; verso of 2d prelim. leaf - verso of 8th prelim. leaf.

The first 50 stanzas of book 32 were translated by Francis Harington, Sir John's younger brother.
