The most practical question in the world is What is a man? Our treatment of anything must depend, in the last resort, on what we think it is: for instance, we treat people one way and dogs another, because of our idea of what a man is and what a dog is. All our institutions- family, school, union, government, laws, customs, anything you please- grew out of what those who made them thought a man was. If something goes wrong with any of them, and we have to decide whether to mend it (and if so how) or to scrap it (and if so, what to put in its place) the first and most practical question is not what shall we do: that is of course ~a~ practical question, but it comes second. The first question we should ask is WHAT IS MAN?

Written in response to the causes contributing to the rise of Adolf Hitler, Sheed describes and refutes the disordered thinking about the nature of man. Only by knowing the truth about man can any reform of the social order be accomplished.
