Three notebooks contain manuscript notes taken by Whitmore in Philosophy 3, The Philosophy of Nature, given in 1898-1899 by Professor Josiah Royce, with additional lectures by Professor George Herbert Palmer. Two notebooks contain Whitmore's manuscript notes in Philosophy 9, Metaphysics, given in 1898-1899 by Professor William James. Examination papers are pasted into the front of four of the volumes.

The Harvard University Archives holds the papers of Josiah Royce (HUG 1755.xx). The Harvard University Archives also holds some papers of William James (HUG 1466.xx).
Whitmore earned his Harvard AB in 1895 and his AM in 1899. He was the rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1910 to 1944, and Rector Emeritus until his death.
