An account of the planning, construction, testing and ultimate failure of the UK government airship r101, covering the period 1926 to 1930, when the airship crashed en route to India. Contrary to many other accounts, the author is sympathetic to the those involved, and notably to the political leader of the project, Lord Thomson, incidents of whose personal life are woven into the story. The book also describes the flight to Canada of the rival airship, R100.
