Book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, based on the novella Carmen by Prosper Mérimée and stage adaptation by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, with music by Georges Bizet.
The play opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York City on December 2, 1943, and ran for a total of 503 performances. Adapted into a movie in 1954.
