This is my recollection from what I remember of my listening to the Roman Martyrology being read to us in the school dining room after lunch during my high school days in the 1950s. This book contains a list of martyrs for each day of the year. The martyrs are those Christians martyred by the Roman Government before 300AD. The author gives a brief description of the technique of the martyrdom of each person, for example beheading or drowning. An unusual choice for a reading after dessert. In my time, contemporary saints -- not necessarily martyrs -- appeared at the top of the list for a given day, for example 17 March lists St. Patrick of Ireland.
