Despite the political and economic importance of both Japan and Korea to western nations whose economies are ever more closely bound up with Asia, and who have fought major twentieth-century wars in the region, academic investigations into Japanese and Korean societies have not yet reached the level where they provide much direct insight into the current social, economic, and political problems confronting the US and other western societies.
