A reply to Bishop Joseph Hall's "A modest confutation of a slanderous and scurilous libell". This is the fifth of Milton's pamphlets written in support of the five Protestant ministers in the Smectymnuus controversy. Cf. Wise, T.J. Ashley lib., 1922-1936, v.3, p. 149.

Smectymnuus = Stephen Marshall, Edmund Calamy, Thomas Young, Matthew Newcomen, and William Spurstowe; the name was derived from the intials of the authors.

The bookseller may be John Rothwell, d. 1649, or his son John Rothwell, d. 1661, both of whom were active at this time at this address.
