Edition Notes
This edition is composed of Thomas Harper's 1640? page by page reprint of the 1612? edition of the Iliad, which was bound with remaining copies of the 1615? edition of the Odyssey. The original title pages for the two works were canceled, and a general title page with Chapman's portrait on verso, engraved by William Hole for the 1616 edition of the works, and a 2nd leaf with a memorial engraving to Prince Henry on recto, verso blank, have been prefixed. In addition, a separate title page, the "enigmatic" title page described in Pforz. 170, was printed for the Odyssey, possibly at the time of the 1640? reprint.
Signatures to the Iliad: ² *⁶ (¹ blank, ⁴ signed A⁴) A-Z 2A-2F⁶ (A⁶, "Faults escaped", canceled) 2G⁸ (2G⁸ blank).
Signatures to the Odyssey: A⁶ (A¹ blank, A² a cancel) B-Q⁶ R⁸ (R⁸ blank) S-Z 2A-2H⁶ 2I⁸ (2I⁸ blank).
Rare Book copy: Not considered to be 2 v. in 1. In this state the reissue of "The Iliads" is replaced by a reprinting by Thomas Harper; recto headlines of the Iliad have "HOMER’S" (italic). "Homers Odysses." has its own t.p. and starts a new pagination and collation, however the engraved t.p. that precedes the work is wanting.
Rare Book copy: S.T.C. 13624c Variant [i.e. Bishop 13624.3 Variant] Differs from film of Folger copy of 13624c: pt. 1 without port. on verso of t.-p. and engraved memorial following; also pt. 2 without added engraved t.-p. (pasted into Folger copy)
