Edition Notes

Copyright June 23rd, 1823 by William B. Fowle.

"Publisher's advertisement. But six thousand copies of this work had been printed when the stereotyped plates, which had been brought to an unusual degree of correctness, were destroyed by fire. The proprietor has been at the trouble and expense of re-stereotyping the whole, and, believing that the new plates are in no respect inferiour to the former, he confidently offers the book ... October, 1824."--verso of title page.

"At a meeting of the School Committee, held July 18th, 1823, it was--ordered, that The American first class book be hereafter used in the publick reading schools instead of Scott's Lessons. Attest, Wm. Wells, Secretary."--Extract from the records of the School Committee of Boston, verso of title page.
