An important study by the American art historian, Carl Schuster (1904-1969). His work on joint-marks was to lead to his seminal paper on genealogical patterns, published in Brazil in the mid-1950s. Schuster's work has yet to be reckoned with. His findings are covered in Carl Schuster and Edmund Carpenter's Patterns That Connect-Social Symbolism in Ancient and Tribal Art (Abrams, 1996). This is an abridgment of a 12-book set, published privately and distributed to scholars and libraries throughout the world.
