Edition Notes

Contains two poems printed side by side on the same sheet. The first is signed "S.S." and dated "January 15. 1719,20." The second poem, "Connecticut's flood, on Merrymak's ebb," is signed "Anthropos," and dated "Extempore, March 10. 1720,21." The two poems have been attributed to Samuel Sewall and his friend John Winthrop, of New London, respectively, by M. Halsey Thomas in The diary of Samuel Sewall, v. 2, New York, 1973, p. 1100-1101.

Thomas includes the suggestion made by Dr. Stephen T. Riley, of the Massachusetts Historical Society, that the printing was done in New London, Conn. The broadside is also included in Hazel A. Johnson's Checklist of New London, Connecticut, imprints, 1709-1800, Charlottesville, Va., 1978, no, 137, because of references made to New London in four lines printed in the margin of Winthrop's poem. Timothy Green was the only printer in New London in 1721.

This is a second printing of Sewall's verses, the first having been printed February 8, 1720/1, according to his diary. No copies of the first printing are known.
