A story about a journeyman lineman nicknamed Slim helping string the power lines across the U. S., the problems, etc. he encountered, the friends, and foes, he made and the problems he faced in helping build the electrical grid for America.
As one particular job ended he was asked if he was sorry the job had ended and he replied, " No, I was looking for a job when I found this one."
The last part of the book ends with Slim working on the power system for the electrified Lackawana railroad.
