Blurring the lines between artistic disciplines - an activity in which modern art has long been engaged - has also led to an expansion of the concept of sculpture in the works of Hans Kupelwieser. This catalogue focuses on Kupelwieser's 'furniture sculptures,' which have thus far not been considered separately. The artist's sculptural oeuvre, oscillating between autonomy and application, emerges from a technically savvy, concept-driven approach to various materials, including objects of daily use, in an exploration of complex questions and data of optics, photography, and the viewer's and user's sensory perception. The furniture sculptures are first and foremost influenced by Kupelwieser's design principle of formal reduction and by the transparency of his processes, which allows him to implement solutions that are as coyly elegant as they are mysterious and baffling. Exhibition: Galerie Georg Kargl, Wien, Austria (14.09. - 17.11.2018).
