Summary: As a member of the Tammany Hall organization in New York City politics Hall became mayor in 1868. Accused in 1871 of being implicated in the scandles of the Tweed Ring, Hall maintained his innocence and refused to resign as mayor. He was indicted and brought to trail in Dec. 1872. Hall conducted his own defense and was acquitted.
