T.p. printed in red and black. Title and illustration on verso of half-title printed within red rule border. Text printed within double black rule border.

"Works by the same author", published by "Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer" and "Bell and Daldy" advertised on p. [1] at end.

Publisher's advertisements: "Messrs. Partridge & Co.'s" on p. 1-8 at end with imprint: "Watson & Hazell, Printers, 28 Charles Street, Hatton Garden, London.".

Illustrators include Harrison Weir, Sir Edwin Landseer, and R. Kretschmer. A few wood-engraved plates and illustrations described as "From a Photograph", or in one instance, "From a Photograph by Turner".

Several wood-engraved plates with signatures by Harrison Weir that include dates from 1868-1870. Several wood-engraved illustrations within the text signed "Dalziel Sc".

MASS copy: Bound in red-brown sand-grain cloth blocked in gold, black and blind. Sunken circular panel in centre of upper cover with a glazed paper inlay of a colour wood-engraved image replicating part of an illustration within the text by Harrison Weir. Spine with imprint: "Partridge & Co. London". Boards with bevelled edges.
