" ... Hellmuth Weissenborn, who around the same time was creating delicious pictorial designs for booklabels and book illustrations, using geometric printers' ornaments which were then marketed by a number of German typefoundries. He bought his as mixed founts by the kilo from the Leipzig foundry of Ludwig Wagner. Weissenborn came to England as a refugee in 1939, bringing his two boxes of ornaments with him, although it was as a wood-engraver that he made his name here. Much of his work in wood was published by the Whittington Press, who also inherited his ornaments when he died in 1982. John Randle at Whittington later passed them on to me, and I have been working with them ever since ... The six pictures printed here, using the original material which dates back to the 1920s, still in its original boxes and still in astonishingly good condition are mostly new, though two are reworkings."--Foreword.
