"Deluxe catalog documents impressive restoration of religious art by the Taller de Restauración de San Agustín in Bogota, promoted by the Augustinian Province of Nuestra Señora de Gracia. Part of this initiative was the restoration of the church of San Agustín in 1980-86 under direction of architect Germán Téllez Castañeda, who gives an account of this undertaking in the introduction. While an adjoining Spanish colonial monastic complex was lost to demolition earlier this century, the inventory of 1797 reproduced in 'Anexo 2' provides a clear idea of the rich artistic treasures that once belonged to the Augustinian community. Additionally, the inventory serves as a valuable documentary reference for the works assembled in the catalog. Included in the 541 entries are important works executed during the Spanish colonial period and later under the patronage of the Augustinian order. Excellent color photographs are accompanied by captions providing basic curatorial data and brief iconographic descriptions"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
