The book contains a comprehensive description of the geometry of involute gears. No previous knowledge of gear geometry is assumed, and the only mathematics required is an understanding of vector algebra. The book starts by proving the law of gearing which is then used to introduce the involute spur gear and to describe many of its properties. A chapter on non-involute gears gives the theoretical background for calculating the shape and curvature of gear tooth fillets. Additional chapters address internal gears, helical gears, parallel-axis helical gear pairs, and the operation of crossed helical gear pairs. Finally, there are chapters on the methods by which involute gears can be cut and on the calculation of their tooth stresses.
