Edition Notes

A reprint of the 1880 ed. published by Tru˜bner, London.

The term GaudĐian (GaurĐian) is adopted by the author to designate collectively all North-Indian vernaculars of Sanscrit affinities, viz. Sindhi, Gujarati, Panjabi, Hindi, Bangali, Oriya, Marathi. The Hindi is divided by him into Western and Eastern Hindi, the former chiefly represented by the Braj dialect, the latter by the Bhojpuri dialect, the grammar of which forms more prominently his subject. cf. Introduction and the author's Essays in aid of a comparative grammar of the GaurĐian languages (Journal of the Asiat. soc. of Bengal, vols 41℗£, 42℗ø, 43℗đ).
