"Earliest known edition, 1575 ... Written c. 1553-1562; reproduced in facsimile, 1910."

For a long time, attributed to Dr. John Still, bishop of Bath and Wells, or to Dr. John Bridges, bishop of Oxford. Latterly, however, a strong case has been put forward in favor of William Stevenson, a fellow of Christ's college, probably from 1551 to 1561. cf. Preface.

Original title: A ryght pithy, pleasaunt anp [i.e. and] merie Comedie: Intytuled Gammer Gurtons nedle; played on stage, not longe ago in Christes colledge in Cambridge. Made by Mr. S. Mr. of art. Imprented at London ... by Thomas Colwell.
