Edition Notes

An account of the memorial ceremonies held in Mexico City in honor of King Luis I (1707-1724), who died of smallpox just seven months after attaining the throne.

Includes the first appearance of Greek in a Mexican book which appears as two lines of leaf 15 recto and on the half-page engraving on verso of leaf 143, 4th count.

Includes an unnumbered plate with the coat of arms of Luis I bound following title page and a folded, engraved plate of a funerary monument bound to face leaf 32 recto; plates numbered I-XXXIV have a half-page engraving with some plates having lines of printed verse or a printed ornamental pattern below the half-page engraving; plates numbered I-XXXIV have been produces as plates and their stubs have been glued together to make a conjugate leaf to be bound within the gathered quires.

Where plates numbered I-XXXIV have lines of verse below engraved "head-pieces" there are catchwords present on the facing leaf; for plates numbered I-XXXIV which have only printed ornaments below the engraved "head-pieces" the catchword present on the facing leaf refers not to the plate but to the text on the page of text next in sequence.

Errors in foliation: leaves 126 and 134, 4th count, misnumbered 226 and 135.

Title page printed within ornamental border; engraved head and tail pieces; initials.

"Parentalis declamatio in regio luctuosissimo funere Ludovici Ferdinandi pijssimi regis Hispani huiusce nominis primi: ante ortum, & post obitum in tenera aetate desiderati, quam in magnifico templo sanctissimae Ecclesiae Cathedralis Metropolitanae Mexiceae die xj. mensis Maij, anno MDCCXXV. Orabat lachrymis vberius, quam vocibus D.D. Carolus Bermudez de Castro, in regia Mexicea Academia in primaria sacrorum canonum cathedra jam rude donatus, tunc ejusdem ecclesiae doctoralis, & electus illustrissimus archiepiscopus sanctissimae ecclessiae metropolitanae Manilensis; jam denique, Deo auspice, consecratus, & à consilijs Catholicae regiae majestatis", leaves [109]-122, has divisional title and is composed entirely in Latin.

"Sermon, que en las reales exeqvias del serenissimo, y potentissimo señor D. Luis Primero rey de las Españas, predicó el Illmo. y Rmo. Sr. Mtro. D. Fr. Joseph de Lanciego, y Eguilaz, monge del gran patriarca San Benito, arzopispo de la santa iglesia metropolitana de Mexico, predicador de S. M. y de su consejo. &c.", leaf [1] and leaves 125-137, 3rd and 4th counts, has divisional title page.

"Jos. Villeriae Roëläei. in praematurum obitum serenissimi, ac potentissimi principis Ludovici I. Hispaniarvm regis elegia", leaves 139-143, consists of verse composed entirely in Latin.

John Carter Brown Library copy 1 imperfect: wanting title page, leaves 34-35, 70-71, and 140-143; wanting unnumbered plate of coat of arms bound following title page leaf, folded engraved plate of funerary monument bound to face leaf 32 recto, and plates numbered IX, X, XXVI, XXVIII, and XXIX; leaf 126, 2nd count (misnumbered 226) is torn and mutilated, but with no loss of text; leaf of plates numbered II, bound to face leaf 55 verso, is torn and wanting engraved illustration at top of page; there is contemporary grafitti in ms. on various leaves; numerous leaves are dog-eared and foxed.
