Edition Notes

The 5th Latin ed., not the 4th. First published 1564. See Voet.

All copies printed at Leiden, but some (such as the present copy) received a t.p. with Plantin's Antwerp imprint; see Voet.

Plantin's device on t.p. (compasses). Author's port. on t.p. verso, signed A for Arnaud Nicolai, who with Cornelis Muller and Gerard Janssen van Kampen was responsible for cutting blocks for the emblems, after drawings by Luc de Heere and Pieter Huys (one by Geoffroy Ballain); see Voet. The section devoted to emblems is followed from p. 289 by that devoted to Roman coins; it is dedicated to Jean Grolier.

Signatures: A-Y⁸.

Voet, L. Plantin press, 2172B

Library's copy lacks C7 with p. 47 and 48.

Binding: vellum over paste paper. Title written at head of spine.

Several woodcuts in library's copy are hand-colored (p. 52, 79, 199, 214, 215). Face drawn in ink on p. 333. Brief inscriptions on p. 274 and 288, a lengthy inscription on back flyleaf.
