Work Description

This novel has been described as mythopoeic speculative fiction. That’s a hard description to pull off in contemporary literature but the author may have done it with language that flows back and forth between poetic philosophy and brooding mystery.

Ask yourself what you would do if you were someone named Danny Blue healing from severe childhood traumas and had finally found somebody whose love could help get over them. But then that person is somehow removed from your life and you find yourself tangled up in a strange mystical musical battle between two legendary icons that you have admired for years.

What would you do if all of a sudden you began to realize that you are something different from what you have always believed yourself to be and the death of the person you loved has somehow encouraged the formation of an off-the-chain death cult?

link textThe book is unusual for the way it mixes the themes of lyrics by two different musicians into a pretty scary plot. It’s also a different kind of paranormal love story that pulls you deeper and deeper inside the strange events. It takes a while before it becomes clear that the setting may or may not be on “this earth” but on a parallel one in a region similar to the southern U.S.

Excerpts

Her body rests upon the painted winged horse, slumped forward, her eyes half-open and glossy beneath the hair fallen over her face, something like a smile shaping her full lifeless mouth. He tumbles from the couch to the floor. The sound of a dialing phone comes from the computer and a recording of her voice is heard asking police to come to her address as soon as possible. For a time, there is only music and the soft hush of a soft light throughout the room. Then a bell rings and a loud knock sounds
from the door.

“If all else fails/ and rumors of war/ remain a fearful truth––/ one thing’s for sure/ that I can do:/ Lover I will fly, fly/ I’ll sail away with you,/ Love will shine the power/ to carry us through./ I’ll sail away with you/ My Sweet Joy/ Said I will fly away with you/ Oh My Joy, My Joy!”

Whether or not he understood what he had just seen on the video, Danny Blue did understand that he had been left without a place to hide.

Whatever Valerie had done to leave this world, to use her words and that of the person she had called “Adviser Ardell,” he knew it was not something he had the ability to do. She had spoken of “annihilating alternatives” and “beautiful possibilities” as if he was supposed to know what she had meant by that. Then it occurred to him that maybe he did.
