Photographic portraits by Mathew Brady of Union General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate General John C. Pemberton mounted on card stock by Frederick Hill Meserve. Grant defeated Pemberton at Vicksburg in a crucial victory for the Union during the Civil War. They had previously served together in the Mexican War. Beneath the photograph of Grant is the signature of his grandson, U.S. Grant 3rd (1881-1968). Beneath the photograph of Pemberton is the signature of his grandson, John C. Pemberton, 3rd (1893-1984). The folder is also signed by Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962) and Robert Lee Kincaid (1893-1960, president of Lincoln Memorial University from 1947-1958).

Regarded as America's first great photography collector, Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962) established himself as an authority in the field of Lincoln photographs. Meserve began collecting Civil War-era photographs to illustrate his father's military memoir. In 1902, Meserve purchased more than 15,000 Mathew Brady glass negatives.
