Nikolaus Himmelmann, a German historian of classical Greek vases, studied at Marburg, Basel and Munich. His dissertation, completed in 1956, was on the Ilissos grave stele from the Kerimeikos. He taught at the universities of Marburg and Saarbrücken. In 1966, he joined the faculty of the university in Bonn.
