Five papers representing different frames of reference have the objective of clarifying and highlighting the interaction between individuals and organizations in developing personal careers. The purpose in doing this is to accomplish manpower planning and the management of human resources more effectively and efficiently as a result of greater sensitivity to individual and organizational interests and needs. The emphasis is on managerial and executive careers. Topics addressed include the dynamic aspects of aggregate and individual personnel management, the management of transitions in career development, individualism and the existence of career anchors as opportunities for, and sources of problems in, the optimal use of people in organizations, the special problems of two-career couples, and steady-state career development in occupations as an alternative to the typical linear career in hierarchical organizations.
