Edition Notes

Holograph.

On one leaf, there are handwritten notes made by Maria Weston Chapman of a letter from [Jean Charles Leonard] de Sismondi to [William Ellery?] Channing, dated 7 September 1835. Sismondi is shocked by the evils of slavery in America, which are a shame to the name of republics. There are also notes on an article entitled "The Nineteenth Century," in which Mrs. Chapman gives an exposition of the principles of George Washington and William Lloyd Garrison.

On the second leaf, Maria Weston Chapman took notes by writing an extract from Wells Brown's "Three Years in Europe." It describes a picture by Tintoretto which represents the miracle of St. Mark descending from heaven to save an early Christian slave from torture. For the Liberator newspaper.
