In this letter, Augustus Hesse describes camp life during the Civil War. He tells about his living quarters and his daily routine. He describes the ruined and desecrated churches in Falls Church. Major General S. P. Heintzelman commands the troops in winter quarters at Fort Ramsay. Upton Hill is the headquarters of Brig. General Kerney(?). Major General Abercrombie praised Augustus Hesse's battery. In the postscript, Augustus Hesse tells of the Christmas dinner sent by Mrs. Faile of Washington and talking to the wounded soldiers who returned from Fredericksburg.
