Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

In this letter, Augustus Hesse says that most of the infantry regiments have left for other quarters, but four new regiments arrived today. When the friendly Pennsylvania Keystone Battery, which had been part of their company, left, the captain gave the order to fire a salute. Augustus Hesse volunteered to go with the mule team to get firewood and found wooden houses, ruined and abandoned by the rebels, which they are using for firewood. Last Sunday, Hesse took a walk to General Lee's former residence, now the headquarters of General Heintzelman. A former slave at this place told Hesse about the marriage and property of General Lee. Hesse includes inscriptions from the graveyard on the property.
