Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

Mary Gray Chapman regrets her separation from Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman while the latter is still suffering in her illness. She describes Deborah [Weston] as a "careful, kind & efficient nurse." Very soon she hopes to have Elizabeth [Bates Chapman Laugel] stay with her. With Mrs. Chapman's permission, Mary G. Chapman will send Elizabeth to school. With the teacher boarding in Mary G. Chapman's house, "Lizzy can have advantages on that account or disadvantages as she would estimate them." Life is very quiet; last summer they were always conscious of Wendell and Ann [Phillips]'s being with them. Among the novelties here is the map of Connecticut in which Mary G. Chapman has searched for Stonington, "a memorable place in our annals."
