Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

This letter is written in French.

Victor Schoelcher regrets not seeing Maria Weston Chapman and her charming daughter since the fortunes of his country forced him to leave it. He finds comfort in the hope of seeing them here. He refers to a (published) letter which he wrote in reply to Mazzini. Victor Schoelcher is grateful to Maria W. Chapman for introducing him to the Parker family. He alludes to a "capital point relating to human liberty" in which Victor Schoelcher does not wish to disagree with Maria W. Chapman.

Embossed on the stationary is "Paris, Rue Rochemart 22."
