In this letter, Maria Weston Chapman answers business questions. She tells under what headings donations should be listed, etc. When Emma Weston comes, she is to bring a Mrs. Hemans, a Longfellow, and Maria Chapman's copy of Lowell, etc., "for here it is of course a desert land as far as English is concerned." Chapman also requests Edgar Allen Poe's "Raven" and "any book upon woman's rights which gives the American Laws," and other items. The weather is damp and disagreeable, unhealthy for Caroline and Maria W. Chapman, while Mary [G. Chapman] and the children do not seem to feel it. Chapman tells of reading Tasso in Italian, and "Lizzy [Elizabeth Bates Chapman Laugel] [is] keeping up with the class very well." Chapman comments on the recovery of the French, "who are very quick people & waiting is tedious to them."
