Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

This is a rough draft of an article dealing with the New Bedford Lyceum and the New Bedford Lecture Association, the former having special seats reserved for colored people, and the latter having been formed by the abolitionists as a protest against this segregation. The Lyceum does not explain its policy of segregation to potential lecturers, who are induced by a fee of $20 and traveling expenses. The Rev. Robert C. Waterston and others "have accepted in their ignorance of the facts," invitations that they would otherwise have rejected.

This was handwritten on the verso and blank pages of printed forms from Mechanics' Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
