This book investigates complex linking between gender, and medical diagnosis in the late nineteenth century and beginning of twentieth in the milleu of French medical establishment. Special attention is paid to investigation of written utterances of patients. The book investigates lives and writing of four women: sculptor Camille Claudel, musician Hersilie Rouy, the feminist Marie Esquiron, and 'self-proclaimed mystic' Pauline Lair Lamotte.
