Correspondence, memoranda, diaries (1935-1967), speeches, writings, reports, newspaper clippings, printed matter, photographs, and other papers relating primarily to Lockwood's naval career during World War II as commander of the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Submarine Force and to his research and writings on submarines. Also documents his service as naval attaché to London, England, in 1941; and Lockwood family affairs. Documents the development of the submarine as an effective military weapon and includes technical data on electric-impact switches, hydraulic doors, night periscopes, radar and sonar instruments, and trial runs of submarines equipped with these devices. Correspondents include Hans Christian Adamson, George T. Bye, Ralph W. Christie, Merrill Comstock, Louis E. Denfeld, Robert S. Edwards, Ernest McNeill Eller, Robert H. English, James Fife, Edward Everett Hazlett, Bodo Herzog, Ben Hibbs, Alan Goodrich Kirk, Francis S. Low, Stuart Shadrick Murray, Chester W. Nimitz, Günter Schomaekers, and Lockwood's wife, Phyllis Irwin Lockwood.
