Correspondence with John Marshall and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, American commissioners to France, relates to the XYZ affair. A 1787 letter pertains to Shays' Rebellion in Massachusetts. Other correspondents include Timothy Pickering and Oliver Wolcott. Some of the letters are written in cipher.
