Chapter One
Introduction
After my National Service,
I began working before I started my own business in 1988.
Therefore, I understand how you felt as an employee.
I can relate to your anger when that
new, inexperienced, and incompetent colleague was promoted
just because he/she happened to be a family member of your boss.
I sympathize with your sadness
when you were passed over for your much deserved advancement.
I know your frustrations as a worker
when your mistakes were always highlighted
while your contributions were played down or forgotten !
You were not alone
when you had to execute silly orders issued by your employer and
to attempt to follow contradicting commands uttered by your bosses.
Likewise,
I know how excited you were when you endured sleepless nights
in establishing your new company.
I empathise with your concern
in facing the problems of maintaining your newly established venture.
I perceive your agony over matters such as
debt collection, rental payment, staff salaries & CPF.
My experiences result from working in two auditing firms and having served several sole-proprietors, partnerships and directors plus including presidents/treasurers of non-profit organisations,
Thus, in 1996, eight years after establishing my enterprise,
I started to teach entrepreneurship.
The title of this book ends with a question mark
because one of the purposes of this book
is to examine whether simplifying a subject
as complex and ever changing as entrepreneurship is possible.
I choose to be like the guest who sat at the lowest place
when attending a wedding dinner
so that I can be elevated to the VIP table by the host.
Similarly it is up to you to pronounce
whether this book makes entrepreneurship simple.
Here is a summary of what this book can do for you.
