Edition Notes
Second edition (Lowndes' Manual (1869) quotes an edition, "Autobiography, tr. by Parke Godwin, Boston, 1847")
Each volume in 2 parts, paged separately; a half-title "Part second" precedes the second and the fourth part.
The first part is translated by the editor; the second by John Henry Hopkins, jr.; third, by Charles A. Dana, and fourth, by John S. Dwight. c̲f̲. Advertisement, pt. II, and editior's note, pt, IV, at end.
In the "Preface to the second edition" (vol. I, p. [v]-xi) the editor calls attention to the fact that the English translation by J. Oxenford, London, H. G. Bohn, 1848, is "not a new translation at all, but a bold appropriation of the American version . . . that the main difference between the two editions consists in the occasional reconstruction or transposition of a sentence, while the great body of the work, in tone, manner, and style, is entirely unchanged."
Of the projected translations mentioned in the editor's note at end of pt. IV ("Annals, or Day and year book," "Italian journey," "Correspondence with Schiller and Zelter") none appears to have come out. Calvert's translation of the "Correspondence between Schiller and Goethe," v.1 of which was published in 1845 by Wiley and Putnam, remained unfinished.
