EVELINE sat at her window thinking of her past and her future. She wasn't sure what to do. Her life was hard and mostly unhappy. But she had the chance to run away with Frank—escape—to a country far away. She could happy then; no more threats from her father. no more sadness. Yes, she decided . , , she would go with Frank.

She stood with Frank waiting to em- bark on their voyage. time had finally come to board the ship, to leave home. Suddenly she remembered the promise she had made to her dying mother: a promise to care for their home and the young ones. But that didn't matter. She had a chance to make her own life.

Frank seized her hand, but Eveline couldn't move. Her hands clutched the rail. Frank stepped aboard the ship and reached for Evvy.
