Garbage dump proposed for BHP mine

The proposed use of BHP Minerals Canada Island Copper mine, Vancouver Island, for a garbage disposal site following mine closure was discussed. The open pit and associated facilities would require 685 000 tonnes of garbage per year to be economically feasable and would be useable for 500 years at that rate. The proposal also includes closure plans which involve sealing of the pit, piping the methane gas produced, and utilizing the heating power (10 megawatts) for various purposes. Treatment of the landfill leachate was also proposed.
