The first and most accurate account of both Francis Light,Founding Superintendent of Penang, and his eldest son William,Surveyor and Founder of Adelaide. Steuart was Light's gggrandson, being descended from his daughter Mary. Steuart had access to family papers and portraits which have since been lost. He made a point of contacting and interviewing all living members of the extended family, borrowing or acquiring documents and paintings. Trained as a lawyer,he came from an erudite Edinburgh background ,and added careful scholarship to his privileged personal knowledge.
