Edition Notes

Last leaf contains errata.
This work is really a new edition of "A statistical view of the district of Maine ... by Moses Greenleaf," Boston, 1816. As that work was issued in connection with Greenleaf's first map of Maine, 1816, so the "Survey" was accompanied by the author's third map, "Map of the state of Maine with the province of New Brunswick by Moses Greenleaf," Portland, 1829.
The atlas has no title page, but a label on cover reading: "Atlas accompanying Greenleaf's map and statistical survey of Maine ... Portland--Shirley & Hyde publishers." The maps are numbered, and their titles do not agree with those on the cover label. The first four are designed to set forth the American claims as to the disputed Northeastern boundary.
CONTENTS OF ATLAS: I. Map of the principal rivers, mountains and highland ranges. 1828.--II. Sketch from Bonchette's maps of Upper and Lower Canada and the District of Gaspe, exhibiting the true range of highlands ... and the imaginary ranges. 1829.--III. Sketch of the imaginary ranges of highlands reported by the British surveyors. [n.d.]--IV. Vertical sections, exhibiting the comparative altitudes of the principal highlands and rivers ... 1828.--V. Maps exhibiting the principal original grants & sales of lands. 1829.--VI. Map of the inhabited part of the state of Maine, exhibiting the progress of its settlement since the year 1778 ... 1829.--VII. Meteorological diagrams [1820-1827] 1829.
