Edition Notes

'Ferguson's Text' may refer to his authorship of 'the manifesto circulated by Monmouth on his landing, in which King James was denounced as a popish usurper and tyrant, and accused of having contrived not merely the death of the Earl of Essex, but of hisbrother the late king. Monmouth afterwards asserted that Ferguson drew it up and made him sign it without having read it.' [DNB, quoting Sir John Bramston's' Autobiography'] Ferguson was surnamed the 'Plotter' [DNB]

'Imprimatur' on verso of title-page; the Sermon is on Ezek. xxi. 25, 26, 27; 'The Epistle Dedicatory' signed:'Robert Wensley'.

Half-title leaf with license on verso: 'Geffery Mayor. Curia Special. tent. die Lunae X1. die Januarii 1685/6. Annoque R. Regis Jacobi Secundi Angl. &c. primo. This Court doth desire Mr. Wensley to Print his Sermon, Preach'd at Guild-Hall-Chappel the 6thof December last, before the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of this City. [signed]: 'Wagstaffe'.
