This is an attempt to describe the competing constitutional arguments about the nature and foundations of the idea of political sovereignty of the French monarchy amidst the Catholic and Huguenot political and clerical advocates during the last years of the 16th century. Eventually the arguments, which were extreme and violent, morphed into the politique solution. Thus they embraced the contradictory elements of absolutism, both monarchic and democratic.
